Disability insurance is especially important for freelancers, who don’t have the luxury of vacation days or sick leave in the case of a life-altering event.
Your disability insurance means you’ll get income replacement checks (like a paycheck) while you can’t work.
We offer two types of disability insurance: one begins 30 days after you become disabled and the other begins 90 days after you become disabled. In other words, in the case of an injury or illness, you would have to wait either 30 or 90 days until you receive income replacement checks. A good rule of thumb is to look for a policy that’s about 50% of your monthly income.

Freelancers Union has partnered with Guardian to provide disability insurance that is designed specifically for freelancers. Benefits are based on your taxable earned income, which is your income after taking any business deductions (rent, equipment, etc.). Guardian will request and review your historical tax returns in order to determine the benefit payout.
